WOW! Guess who makes almost $400000 a year

No I don’t make that much money but guess who does? Nigerian law makers. Yes those guys in the national assembly who were fighting on national television the other day. The annual salary for a law-maker is about $198739 per year and allowances of about 194636. I’m not sure if the allowances are monthly but I really hope they are annually. Just to put it into perspective I tried to find out what lawmakers in other countries earn and I came up with these numbers.

UK: $106,097.10 and allowances of about 193,302.94
New Zealand: about $149,918.35 including allowances
EU: $316,579 including allowances ( I think)
Canada: $153,406.55 including allowances
US: $174,000
Nigeria: $198739 (annually) and allowances $194636.65 (maybe monthly)
( all annually of course).

Seems unbelievable doesn’t it. Wait till you read the break down of allowances paid to Nigerian MP’s.

consistency allowance @ 200% of Basic Salary
Furniture Allowance @ 300% of basic salary
Newspaper allowance @ 50%
Wardrobe allowance @ 25%
Recess Allowance @ 10%
Accommodation @ 200%
utilities @ 30%
Domestic Staff @ 75%
Entertainment @ 30%
Personal Assistance @ 25%
Vehicle Maintainance Allowance @ 75%
Leave Allowance @10%

and my personal favorite HARDSHIP Allowance @ 50% of Basic Salary

Very very interesting indeed, especially since we’re supposed to be a poor 3rd world. Don’t take my word for it though. Do some research and see if you come up with different numbers

  1. I HATE THE NIGERIAN GOVT!… IF GOD SAYZ MK A WISH & HV NO REGRETS MA WISH WIL B “DEAR GOD KILL ALL DA BAD POLITICIANS & GOVT PPL IN NIGERIA!” …..
    p.s luv u moda-land!!!

  2. Nonso, perhaps the reason they are 3rd world has a significant bearing to why the leadership makes so much money. It’s not being distributed to the people, or better yet….being left with the people with minimal taxation and minimal transfer payments. Look at some of the wealthiest places in the world like U.K., Canada, New Zealand…much less. Even U.S. though the high $ has to do with superpower status, but still not quite up there as Nigeria. Man.

  3. Omo this is crazy. I remember when the furniture allowance thing came to light about 10 years ago. I thought they would’ve removed it, but nope. Hardship allowance? Really?… Naija govt get liver o.
